Two injured in house fire in Milford

MILFORD – Two people sustained minor injuries as they fled a burning two-family home at 12-14 Green Street on Wednesday.

The wounds were mainly scrapes, Captain Chris Zak said, adding that when firefighters arrived thick smoke was billowing from the attic on the third floor.

“The guys did a phenomenal job because the buildings in this neighborhood are very old and they have a lot of empty spaces,” Zak said. “The fire was in a very hard to reach area of the house, and the guys had to climb a staircase that was about as wide as a firefighter with all his gear. Then they did a fantastic job on it. ‘tear down.”

He said that usually in a fire of this nature, the roof catches fire and the house quickly becomes a total loss.

“They really attacked him when he came out on top this time around,” he said.

Authorities said there were two people in the house at the time of the fire, and at least five people are believed to be living there. Some residents were at the scene watching the firefighters at work, but they did not want to speak to reporters. The house seemed uninhabitable, at least for the moment. In addition to fire damage in the attic, the second floor also suffered smoke and water damage.

Engine manufacturers 1, 4, 5 and 7 responded. A ladder truck arrived from Stratford as reinforcement, as did an engine from West Haven.

The fire, which apparently started in the attic, is under investigation.

The wood-frame house was built in 1880, according to the city’s land registers, and is owned by James and Daniel Pino. It is valued at $ 404,000 and assessed for taxes at $ 283,000.

Erin Reilly, a bystander at the scene, said the fire was first reported by a passerby on a cell phone and then by a police officer. “They had it under control within 10 minutes,” she said.

The house sits south of historic Green, an area of Victorian and Colonial era homes between Milford Harbor and the town center green.
