MILFORD – Temperatures were hovering around zero Monday night as firefighters in several towns helped the Milford Fire Department tackle the blaze and freezing cold during a midnight fire at 25 Crosby St.
No one was injured, Milford Fire Chief Jack Kelly said, but “The conditions were really bad… it was just miserable. “
Mutual aid from several towns, including Amherst, Wilton, Mont Vernon and Brookline, helps keep firefighters running so they can avoid frostbite and hypothermia. The departments of Merrimack and Bedford covered Milford Station.
The owner of the single-family home and some of his family were at the house when the fire started, Kelly said, and were able to leave safely.
The cause was undetermined, but the fire likely started in the woodstove and spread quickly due to the balloon frame construction of the old house meaning there was no cut -fire.
