MILFORD – Milford Schools honored a college guidance counselor, high school cookie baker and PTA parent as Teacher, Para-educator and Parent of the Year for 2021-2021.
“This year, more than any other, we are very grateful for the selfless and enthusiastic work of all of our winners,” said Superintendent of Schools Anna Cutaia. “The past year presented us with many unexpected challenges, and our teachers, paras and parents really stepped up to make sure everyone’s needs were met while being friendly and enthusiastic. It was truly amazing to watch.
Jill McCormack, who works at West Shore Middle School, was named teacher of the year. Schools cited her as a “dedicated and enthusiastic practitioner, skillfully using her collaborative problem-solving skills to find solutions.”
McCormack founded various special programs, such as the School-Wide Peer Support Group, Anti-Bullying Campaign, Annual High School Fair, Sixth Grade Orientation, Weeks of L spirit, promoting the eighth grade of Law Rocks and a variety of fundraisers designed to benefit the community at large.
Kacey Golebiewsdki, who works primarily with students with special needs at Jonathan Law High School, was named Para-Educator of the Year for her work in building the practical skills of the students she works with.
Golebiewski developed Bobo’s Biscuits During the Pandemic, a business her students could operate, and she tailored roles within the business to each student’s strengths. Roles included cookie making, marketing, accounting, packaging and distribution. The program was successful and students sold cookies at school and through Parsons Perks coffee carts at central district offices.
Christina Marini, whose children attend Pumpkin Delight Primary School, is the Parent of the Year 2020-21.
School officials described Marini as a strong supporter of the home-school bond and a long-time member of the Pumpkin Delight PTA. Officials said during the pandemic, parents need to be inventive when planning family-friendly programs and student-friendly events.
Even with COVID forcing schools to revise their curricula, Marini ensured that school plant sales, yearbooks, student science fairs, field days, STEM-based extracurricular activities and the Read Across celebration. America took place this year.
