Pupils in the Milford Exempt Village School District will begin school on Monday August 31, a week later than originally planned.
Superintendent John Spieser said on the school district’s website that the district needs more time to prepare due to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 outbreak and because the district has extended the deadline for parents to choose in-person or online instruction for their children.
“We know that this delay will be a disadvantage for our families. However, it is the right thing to do right now for our students and staff, ”said Spieser.
“All of our staff have worked diligently to open the school, but with the challenges that COVID presents, some things have turned out to take longer than expected. “
Giving staff an extra week to prepare will help tremendously, Spieser said.
“An extra week will give us more time to finalize the student schedules. Our transport department will have more time to finalize routes next week, ”said Spieser.

The Milford School District serves approximately 6,600 students who live in Milford, Miami Township, Miamiville and parts of Goshen and Union Townships.
Their parents initially had until August 7 to decide whether to send them to school buildings or opt for distance education by teachers in Milford.
Changes to the “freeze period”
“We initially implemented a ‘freeze period’ until the end of the first two weeks of school, allowing no changes between learning plans,” said Spieser.
“Yet to meet the diverse needs of our families, we have enabled parents to transition their children from in-person dating to online dating.
“We overloaded ourselves with the number of requests that we committed to responding to, which then had a huge impact on teacher assignments and student schedules,” said Spieser.
Requests to switch from in-person instruction to online instruction will not be reviewed until Monday, September 14.
Spieser said the delay in the start of the school year will not affect the schedules for sports or other extracurricular activities.
