MILFORD – A 74-year-old woman working at a Milford motel suffered multiple fractures to her head and needed nine staples to close a scalp wound after she was pistol whipped on a robbery Monday night.
Two Bridgeport residents charged with the burglary – Elben Quinones, 51, and Melanie Lugo, 34 – were arraigned on Wednesday in Superior Court, where a judge ordered their detention instead of $ 500,000 and $ 250,000 of bonds.
Both were charged with first degree assault of a senior citizen, first degree theft, first degree theft and related conspiracy charges.
The theft took place at the Mayflower Motel on Woodmont Road around 9:45 p.m. Monday.
Quinones and Lugo were arrested Tuesday after being found at a Motel in Bridgeport.
According to a probable cause report, Quinones allegedly baited the office motel worker by claiming that a microwave in the laundry room was broken.
When the woman entered the room, Quinones reportedly grabbed her by the neck and pointed a gun at her face. The victim attempted to retaliate, but Quinones allegedly hit her in the face with the pistol and then hit her again with the pistol while she was on the ground.
The woman lost consciousness in the attack, according to the police report.
Quinones then allegedly picked up the cash register from the motel office before getting into a car parked in a Dunkin ‘Donuts across the street.
Witnesses told police that a man matching Quinones’ description recently stayed at the motel, in a registered room in Lugo.
Surveillance footage showed Lugo and Quinones coming and going from the room in the days leading up to the robbery, and ultimately carried out the robbery on Monday, according to the police report.
Police checking area hotels for suspects found them at the Sunnyside Inn on Lake Street in Bridgeport on Monday afternoon, where they were arrested around 4 p.m.
The victim’s injuries included an orbital fracture as well as facial, jaw and sinus fractures, as well as scalp bruises and cuts to the face with “temporary loss of sight”.
“There is no timetable on when the victim could be discharged from the hospital,” the police report said.
Lugo and Quinones are scheduled to return to court on June 5 and 6, respectively.
